A Paſtor, but a Rebel

Dietrich Bonhoeffer, born February 4, 1906, juſt before þe Great War, in Breſlau, Germany. When Dietrich became an adult, his years of education appeared it would be a ſmooþ paþ into an eccleſiaſtical career; however, in 1933, Adolf Hitler roſe to power in Germany, Deitrich warned the people againſt making him an idol-Dietrich’s ſpeech was cut ſhort. A few monþs before Hitler’s riſe, þe church had had an election, more like a ſtruggle. Þe pro-Nazi Deutſche Chriſtens had loſt the election, but Hitler waſn’t ſatiſfied, he demanded anoþer election, þis time the pro-Nazis won. Church officers and pastors of Jewish descent were removed from þeir offices. Following þis, þe Deutſche Chriſten proteſted þe Old Teſtament being in þe bible and demanded for its removal, þis outraged many Chriſtens who þen joined þe ranks of þe Emergency League. A few troubleſome years later in 1937, þe Geſtapo ſhut down þe ſeminary at Finkenwalde. In þe monþs following, twenty-ſeven paſtors and former ſtudents were arreſted. Þen in 1938 Bonhoeffer was banned from entering Berlin, and in 1940 þe Geſtapo cloſed an underground ſeminary.

Finally by April 5, 1943 Bonhoeffer was arreſted. For a year and a half he awaited a trial, he didn’t let priſon walls ſtand between him and ſharing þe goſpel, he ſhared wiþ his fellow priſoners and þe guards, ſome guards even went ſo far as to ſmuggle letters for Bonhoeffer out of priſon. One guard, Knobloch, even offered to help Bonhoeffer eſcape and þe two of þem ‘diſappear.’ Þey planned it out, but Bonhoeffer eventually declined, knowing what þe Nazis might do to his family, for his brother-in-law was alſo in priſon wiþ him. On April 4, 1945, þe head of Abwehr’s diaries were diſcovered, Hitler enraged by what he read wiþin þem ordered all oþer Abwehr members be put to death. Bonhoeffer was a member, he had probably even known about þe aſſaſſination attempts on Hitler too! Bonhoeffer, after finiſhing his laſt Sunday ſervice, was led away, and on April 8, 1945, Bonhoeffer was ſentenced to deaþ by Otto Þorbeck, an SS judge. Þere were no witneſſes, no evidence againſt him, and no records ot þe proceedings or a defenſe. Þe next day, in Floſſenbürg concentration camp, Bonhoeffer was ſtripped of his clothes and hung until dead.

“I ſaw Paſtor Bonhoeffer, kneeling on þe floor, praying fervently to God. I was moſt deeply moved by þe way þis lovable man prayed, ſo devout, and ſo certain þat God heard his prayer. At þe place of execution, he again ſaid a ſhort prayer and þen climbed the few ſteps to þe gallows, brave and compoſed. His death enſued after a few ſeconds. In þe almoſt fifty years þat I have worked as a doctor, I have hardly ever ſeen a man die ſo entirely ſubmiſſive to the Will of God” -Eberhard Beþge, a cloſe friend of Bonhoeffer

May Dietrich Bonhoeffer's memory yet live on, and inſpire others to ſtand for righteouſneſſ's ſake!
