The story of Bruchko is the story of a missionary, though staring into death’s eyes multiple times, never gave up bring the message of his Lord, to those who had never heard.

Bruce Olson, born November 10, 1941, was a Lutheran; however, he felt as though he was lacking something, then while he was reading, a verse seemed to jump out at him. “For the Son of Man is come to seek and save that which is lost.” feeling lost, he asked Jesus to change him. He felt a presence in the room, a peace came to him.

He told his friends and pastor, but they didn’t seem to get it. In fact they were highly discouraging toward him-except for his friend Kent. Shortly afterwards, Kent received Jesus and invited Bruce to come to his church. He was shocked. Kent’s church was amazing, it was free! Soon Bruce began going to Kent’s church weekly, but not all was well.

The newfound peace and joy in Christ also lead to problems at home. And a few weeks later in the dead cold darkness of winter, Bruce came home and found the door locked. He had been locked outside, and he wasn’t coming inside tonight.

Not only was his new love of Christ met with discouragement, but also his mission-hood. He was rejected by the mission board. Then he knew, he was going to have to go himself, and at 19 he flew to Venezuela. Suddenly on the plane ride, he realized something. He didn’t know an ounce of Spanish. After arriving at the airport, he waited hours for a contact that never came.

Eventually a poor family invited him to stay in their already cramped house, and he learned slang Spanish. The family knew a doctor who served the natives.
